Construction work has begun to prepare the Red Door building for its upcoming move to the corner of Evanston Avenue N. and N. 34th, which is one block to the west of its current site, the corner of Fremont Avenue N. and N. 34th.
The Red Door building, which was built around 1900, is being moved to make way for a new apartment complex with street-level retail that a company called Security Properties plans to build.
Suzie Burke, president of the Fremont Dock Co., reports that the Red Door tenants got a scare when a wall along the north side of the building broke while construction workers were reinforcing the south side of the building with steel.
³The wall on the north side had evidently at some point in time been added on to,² said Burke. When the north wall broke, construction workers discovered to their surprise that the wall consisted largely of lath thin, narrow strips of wood and plaster. ³Thatıs all that was holding it together,² she said.
³When they tell you they donıt build em like they used to, sometimes thatıs a good thing!,² she joked.
The broken wall prompted the construction crew to order the upstairs tenants to immediately evacuate. Fortunately, the tenants have managed to temporarily lease space in a nearby building that Fremont Dock Co. also owns.
Burke said the Red Door buildingıs north wall will be repaired and reinforced with steel as well which should solve its structural problems.
The buildingıs upcoming move, which is set to take place by April 22, is still on schedule, Burke added.
