Red Door building nominated as landmark

By CLAYTON PARK

The City's Landmarks Preservation Board is scheduled to consider a Landmark Nomination for the Red Door Ale House/Dubliner Tavern building at a meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 1, beginning at 3:30 p.m.. The meeting will be held in Room 1003, 10th floor, of the Arctic Building, 700 Third Avenue, in downtown Seattle.

The Red Door building, as it is known today, was built around 1903, according to current owner Suzie Burke, who spoke about the building's history to the Jet City Maven for an article published in August 1999. The building was originally located "down on the flats" where the Ship Canal is today, but was later moved by a team of horses who rolled the building over logs to its current location on the northwest corner of N. 34th and Fremont Ave. N. It was uprooted a second time shortly after its move to make way for the City's plan to raise the level of the street by 30 feet. Over the years, the building has served as home to a pharmacy and later, in 1938, a tavern.

The public is invited to attend the Landmarks Preservation Board's meeting and make comments. Written comments should be received by the board by Oct. 27. (Mail written comments to the address listed for the meeting. The zip code is 98104.) A copy of the Landmark Nomination is available for public review at the Fremont Neighborhood Service Center, 908 N. 34th. For more information, call 206-684-4054.
