NSCC hosts Globetrotter Camp

Some of the most exciting basketball players in the world will be at North Seattle Community College from July 17-21 for the Harlem Globetrotters Youth Summer Basketball Camp. The camp is for boys and girls between 6 and 16 years of age. All skill levels are welcome.

Awards will be given daily for hustle, citizenship, and most free throws made.

Development of individual and team skills will culminate on the last day of camp as campers will have a chance to scrimmage against the Globetrotters. Participants will receive a camp T-Shirt, camp photo, a mini basketball, and an autographed picture of the Globetrotters.

The camp will take place in the NSCC gym at 9600 College Way North. Registration is $175 and the deadline is July 7 at 5 p.m. Space is limited, so early registration is encouraged.

Green Lake crew teams capture titles

With 500 meters to go in the men's eight race at the Junior Nationals Regatta in Cincinnati last month, Green Lake Crew found themselves in third place. That is when they made their move, surging past St. Joseph's Prep and edging Cincinnati Junior Rowing Club by less than a foot at the finish line.

Green Lake's winning time was 5:49.20 while Cincinnati, the defending champion, came in at 5:49.44. "It was the most exciting race that I have ever seen," said Lenny Kong, a member of the Green Lake Crew Rowing Advisory Council.

The Green Lake men's eight is composed of rowers from six area high schools: coxswain Shaina Kennedy of Northwest School; Casey Clingan, Avery Dahl, and Evan Gibson of Roosevelt; Rob Curran and Warren Caldwell of University Prep; Matt Kopicky of Ballard; Ben Christiancy of Blanchet; and Ryan Becker of Edmonds-Woodway.

Also winning titles in Cincinnati were the Green Lake women's lightweight eight and Cooper Lange in the men's singles. The women's lightweight eight (rowers must weigh less than 130 pounds) won their event by nearly five seconds.

Lange, who just completed his sophomore year at Blanchet High School, was invited to Cincinnati only after another rower dropped out. He came on to have the race of his life, defeating the second place finisher by almost three seconds.
