Green Lake Milk Carton Seafair Derby set for July 8

Expect to see miniature battleships and a replica Coast Guard cutter. Dragons, alligators, and an 18-wheeler might also be spotted.

The 29th annual Green Lake Seafair Milk Carton derby will take place on Saturday, July 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The derby attracts a wide range of innovatively designed boats that compete in a variety of categories.

Crafts must be homemade and rely on milk cartons as the primary means of flotation. Only human power can be used for propulsion. Designs are limited only by the imagination.

Twenty-five half gallon milk cartons are needed for every hundred pounds of weight. Also, contestants are reminded to use waterproof glue.

The derby categories include racing, military, commercial, open, and showboat. The categories are further broken down by age groups.

Prizes include a vacation for four to San Diego, cash, gift certificates, a Lake Washington cruise, and an Orcas Island vacation package.

Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. near the old Aqua Theater at Green Lake. For more information call Seafair at 206-728-0123 or log on to www.seafair.com.
