Many North Seattle elementary school students will be learning something new this fall, and it won't be mathematics, reading comprehension, or art. Their lesson will come in riding a school bus for the first time.
Bryant Elementary School, located in View Ridge, will be moving to the Lincoln School in Wallingford for the 2000-2001 school year. The move will allow for the remodeling and refurbishing of Bryant.
The biggest change for the students will be riding a school bus across town, something that many have never done before. Most Bryant students are used to either walking or getting a ride to school from an adult. To prepare for the new experience, Bryant has held several bus assemblies, giving students an idea of what to expect from bussing.
According to a Bryant School employee, the kids are looking forward to riding the bus. She said that the parents are more worried about it than the kids. Next fall, up to twenty busses will pick the children up at designated stops in the View Ridge area.
While the outside and front of Bryant will still look the same after renovation, the inside will be gutted. A new gym, cafeteria, library, and reconfigured classrooms are slated for construction. The water, electrical, and heating systems will also be updated. "It's going to be totally different," said the Bryant School employee who requested anonymity.
To allow for large assemblies and events, the cafeteria and gym will be constructed side by side. They can then be connected for special occasions.
Groundbreaking for the new Bryant Elementary School took place on June 14.
Bryant Elementary is located at 3311 NE 60th. The Lincoln School is at 4400 Interlake Ave N.
