With chants of "Salmon not Simon" and "Daylight Thornton Creek," a group of 60 protesters held a rally in front of City Hall on March 9 to let the Mayor and City Council know their desire to have Thornton Creek daylighted in the area south of Northgate Mall. The Simon reference was directed towards Simon Property Group, the Indianapolis based developer who owns Northgate.
Members of Thornton Creek Legal Defense Fund, Citizens for a Liveable Northgate, Livable Communities Coalition, the Seattle Group of the Sierra Club, and several other community organizations took part in the march. Holding salmon shaped signs that had slogans such as "Mayor Schell, No More Simon Sez" and "Northgate Unfair to Neighborhood," the marchers walked down and back along 4th Avenue before stopping in front of the entrance to the Seattle Municipal Building. At this point the group began chanting "Wake up, Mayor Schell."
The protest went on for several minutes before moving down the block and dispersing. After the march, citizens delivered more than 700 signed petitions to the Mayor and City Council calling for the daylighting of Thornton Creek.
