City to replace culvert near Little Brook
The City is planning to replace a street culvert along 35th Avenue Northeast. The culvert, which collects storm water runoff, is cracked and failing, according to Charles Oppelt, project manager for Seattle Public Utilities. At a recent meeting at the Lake City Neighborhood Service Center, Oppelt presented a project to replace the existing 24-inch-wide culvert with a larger one that's 60-inches wide over the summer. The project will also improve fish habitat along Little Brook Creek, which is located near the culvert, by making the culvert "fish passable." Traffic along the road may be affected at times with possible momentary closures while a pipe is jacked into the road.
New Greenwood, Ballard libraries seek sites
A second community meeting to discuss possible sites for the new Greenwood library will take place on Wednesday, March 29, in the Egan Auditorium at St. John's School from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. The school is located at 123 N. 79th St.
There are currently eight sites in the Greenwood area being considered as locations for the new library which is set to open in 2002. The $6.4 million voter-approved library will feature large areas for children and teens, upgraded computer workstations, expanded book collections, additional parking, and more. For more information call 386-4173.
Ballard is also studying sites and seeking community input on selection of architects for their new $6.5 million voter approved library facility. Citizens are invited to meet the three architectural firms that remain in the running for the job and see display boards featuring their work from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 16, at the current Ballard library. The library is located at 5711 24th Ave. N.W. Comment forms will be available.
There are two possible sites for the new Ballard library that have received enthusiastic support from the community. These are the Bartell Drug Store and U.S. Bank properties which both lie within two blocks of Market Street and offer high visibility. A third possible site is the Eagles Hall and adjacent Service Garage at the junction of 24th Avenue Northwest and Northwest 56th Street. The Eagles Hall is on the list primarily as a backup in case the Library Board is not able to act expeditiously on the other sites. For more information call 386-4624 or log on to www.spl.org.

The campaign will continue in Wallingford at least through the end of March and possibly into April.
The goal of the WWC is to inform people of the issues and encourage them to get involved in the protection of these lands.
