For those folks, Buchanan has a better suggestion. She invites the public to join her in celebrating the new Millennium as well as her "retirement" after 20 years as owner of Glamorama, one of the most eclectic shops in Seattle's most eclectic neighborhood, Fremont - a.k.a. the Center of the Universe.
On Dec. 31, Buchanan will host a Center of the Universe Ball at 575 N. 34th St., beginning at 8 p.m. The ball will feature performances by several top local bands including pop dance band Dudley Manlove Quartet, an 8-piece mambo orchestra called Mambo 9, the big salsa sounds of a 14-piece band called Orquesta Nueva Era, and a 12-piece Cuban dance ensemble called Yerba Buena.
A free salsa dance lesson will be taught at 9 p.m. to all who want to learn.
Party-goers will also receive a complimentary bagel and coffee breakfast at 12:30 a.m. as well as party favors.
Proceeds from the event will benefit Baby Cupboard (a food program) and The BRA Show (breast cancer research charity).
Tickets are $40 if purchased in November, $45 if purchased between Dec. 1-15, and $50 if purchased from Dec. 16-31. Tickets are available at Glamorama, La Sirena Rosa and Ticketmaster. Designated drivers get free VIP parking and sodas (call 633-4828 to sign up).

Center of Universe Ball to be held on New Year's Eve
"Friday, Dec. 31, 1999 will be one of the biggest evenings of festivities the world has seen in the last 50 years," promises Glamorama owner Charlotte Buchanan. "Folks are looking for that one special event to welcome and celebrate the coming of year 2000, (but) most folks can't afford to fly to that special cliff in New Guinea and spend New Year's Eve snuggling, watching midnight fireflies kiss and catch that 'special moment,' or be in Times Square with Dick Clark and the crazed masses."
