Attention artists: Roosevelt wants you

The Roosevelt Arts Council is inviting artists to submit proposals for a "signature/identification work or works that will put the Roosevelt Neighborhood on the map and nurture a specific Roosevelt identity," according to a press release issued by the council.

The arts council, which is working in conjunction with the Roosevelt Neighborhood Association and Roosevelt Chamber of Commerce, describes the public art project as an outgrowth of local neighborhood planning efforts.

The deadline for submitting slides to the arts council is Nov. 19. The arts council will review the slides and present them to the public at a meeting on Nov. 23.

On Dec. 28, the arts council will select five finalists who will each receive a $1,200 honorarium to develop a model.

A neighborhood meeting will be held on Feb. 22 to present the finalists' models, where the community will be invited to offer their input. The arts council will then select the winning proposal. The selected artist will be given the remaining budget amount, $28,000, to create the identification project, which is to be completed by July 18, 2000.

The arts council plans to unveil the artwork at a neighborhood celebration that will be held before July 31.
