Local artists' creation makes Big Apple debut

A rotating model of Planet Earth designed by a team of artists from North Seattle recently made its debut in New York City.

The six-foot steel and glass globe was designed by Chameleon Visual Arts, an artists collective, to serve as the centerpiece in the lobby of the new world headquarters for Fossil, makers of the popular designer watches.

The rotating model uses slumped-textured glass, neon tubes and steel bands to depict the continents and oceans of the earth. Circling above the planet's surface is a miniature replica of an early DC-3 airliner. The entire globe sits on top of a seven-foot motorized base.

The project was designed by Chameleon founder Pat Cole, and created by Fremont artists Chris Daly of Emerald City Glass Design and Hahn Rossman of the Alki Foundry.
