University YMCA to break ground for expansion

The University Family YMCA will break ground for a 4,900-square-foot addition, on Friday, June 4, beginning at noon.

The expansion of the center, located at 5003 12th Ave. NE, will nearly double the space available for programs and member services. The day's events will inlcude recognition of major donors, William H. Gates Foundation and Safeco; burial of a time capsule and Kids Gym activities for young children.

The expansion will include a new Youth Development Center, a new multi-purpose community room, a new cardiovascular work-out area, renovated women's and men's locker rooms, upgrades to existing spaces and additional space in the existing weight/fitness room.

In related news, Cathy McCluskey was recently named branch director of the University Family YMCA. She formerly served as interim CEO and branch executive director at the Boulder Valley YMCA in Colorado. She has been affiliated with the YMCA for more than 17 years.

Several volunteers from the University Family YMCA were also honored in April by the YMCA of Greater Seattle:

Jennifer Bennett was named Youth Volunteer of the Year for her participation in several teen programs, including Teen Time and Snowboarding. She co-chairs a committee of teen leaders known as Students With Alternatives to Teach, Educate and Motivate (SWAT TEAM). She is currently a freshman at the University of Washington;

Stacie Foster was named Program Volunteer of the Year for having spent the last nine years as a volunteer aerobic instructor for the YMCA, the past five at the U-District location. She is an attorney and mother of four children;

Mearl Bergeson was named Policy Volunteer of the Year. He has been a member of the University Family YMCA board since 1997 and currently chairs the center's Youth Commitee in addition to being Chief of Y-Guides and Princesses for North Seattle;

Joe Hauser was named Financial Development Volunteer of the Year. He has been a member of the University Family YMCA board since 1994 and currently serves as Board Chair. He has also served as Partners With Youth Campaign Chair for the past four years.
