Architectural walking tours of U-District offered

Real estate agent Jim Stacey wants to show you the town, or at least of it. Stacey, an agent who works and lives in Phinney Ridge, has been hosting architectural walking tours of the University District for only about a year. However, his clever wit and architectural knowledge promise to make this an entertaining evening.

Stacey says the goal is to explain the various differences in architectural styles of both commercial and residential structures based on roof lines, building materials, and other hints. For instance, "The bungalow is generally front-and-center with a wide porch, whereas the Queen Anne is offset, both door and porch." He says the styles in the area include "Art Deco," "Foursquare," "English Tudor," "Bungaloid," "Disgraceful," and "Demolishable."

Stacey says another interesting part of the tour is examining generational changes to structures and why they occurred.

"The reward," he says, "is at the very end of the class is to see a house where (serial killer) Ted Bundy once lived, even though it has no architectural significance."

Two more tours are scheduled this spring, one on April 23 and the other on May 28. The tour is given through the University of Washington's Experimental College.
