Neighborhood development conference, April 19
Now that many communities are nearing the completion of their Neighborhood Planning processes, the next phase will be figuring out how their visions can be turned into reality.
The successful implementation of those plans will require cooperation in some degree with private sector developers.
How to do that is the subject of a Neighborhood Development Conference that will be held on Monday, April 19, 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Pacific Medical Building, 10416 5th Ave. NE.
The event is sponsored by Southeast Effective Development, the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce and the Neighborhood Business Council.
For more information, call Roger Valdez at 329-4183.
Washington Wilderness to canvas Bitter Lake
If you receive a knock on your door over the next few weeks, it could be the Washington Wilderness Coalition calling. The group will be handing out information and educating the public on efforts to maintain our clean water, wild salmon, and pristine forests. The group's primary focus is on protecting wild forests.
Sand Point improvements underway
A project to upgrade the utility systems on the former Sand Point Navy Base is currently underway. The project entails the renovation or replacement of most of the outdated utility systems including water, sewer, electrical, telecommunications and natural gas. On Feb. 16, Mid-Mountain Contractors began mobilizing its crews and equipment on the site. Actual excavation began in early March.
The firms Entranco and Matson/Carlson have been retained to provide direct construction management services and surveying. Seattle Public Utilities, Seattle City Light and the Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation will inspect the work. Puget Sound Energy will install new gas service in conjunction with the City's utility work.

Emergency access will be maintained at all times. "Traffic Alert" signs will be posted throughout the construction period.

Volunteers needed for Spring Clean '99
It's time for community, school and business volunteers to organize their work teams, select their projects, and sign up for Spring Clean '99, Seattle's Cleanup of Public Spaces.
Joining the City of Seattle in sponsoring Spring Clean activities again this year are the Seattle School District, Student Conservation Association's Earth Work Northwest, and Seattle Works. Last year nearly 20,000 volunteers painted out graffiti, picked up litter and illegal dumping, stenciled storm drains, cleaned parks and school yards, removed invasive plants in watersheds, and planted trees.
Special emphasis will be given this year to urban creek restoration and preservation, following listing of the chinook as threatened under the federal Endangered Species Act, and to planting trees throughout Seattle. Spring Clean '99, which began March 27, runs through May 9.
In addition to providing customers with a reliable water supply, Seattle Public Utilities provides essential sewer, drainage, solid waste and engineering services that safeguard public health, maintain the City's infrastructure, and protect, conserve and enhance the region's environmental resources.
Information and sign-up packets about Spring Clean '99 are available from Seattle Public Utilities by calling 233-7187 or by visiting the Web at www.ci.seattle.wa.us/util.
