Greenwood danceclub to open March 5

According to a sign posted on the building, a new "18 and over danceclub" called Club Odessy is set to open Friday, March 5, in Greenwood. The club, located at 300 NW 85th, replaces the Upside Down Club, an all-ages non-alcoholic danceclub that formerly occupied that spot.

NIAOM moves to Fremont

The Northwest Institute of Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine (NAIOM) held an open house on Feb. 20 to celebrate its move from Wallingford to its new home at the Quadrant Lake Union Center in Fremont. State Insurance Commissioner Deborah Senn, whose cousin, Richard Senn, serves on NIAOM's board, was on hand to give a brief presentation. The open house also included a traditional Chinese Lion Dance that was performed for good luck and prosperity in the new year, and guests were invited to tour NIAOM's new home.

The 20,000-square-foot space, located on the third floor of the 701 Building, includes classrooms, clinics and administrative offices. NIAOM employs 20 staff members and 40 faculty members. It currently serves more than 260 students.

NIAOM was established in 1981 as a non-profit educational institution whose mission is to "provide the highest quality academic and clinical programs in acupuncture and Oriental medicine and to provide low-cost health care to the community."

Nice Day Coffee gets new owners, new name

The Nice Day Coffee Co. in Wallingford recently gained new owners who have wasted little time in expanding the menu to include a larger offering of tea blends -- and computers, both for on-premises rental use (which includes superfast Internet access) and as well as for sale.

To reflect the changes, the owners, who will retain the Nice Day Coffee Co. sign, have also expanded the name of the shop to include the words: "Cyberbear Internet Tea Garden."

The new owners, who purchased the coffeehouse from John Paul Jones in late January, are part of a Taiwan-based computer store chain that sells its own line of PCs called Bear Computers. Joe Hong, the new manager of the Wallingford store, says his company operates a chain of cybercafes, restaurants and theme parks similar to Gameworks. Locally, they also operate a Cyberbear Cafe in Factoria and up until recently also ran a store in the U-District.

The new owners have temporarily suspended the former Nice Day's live music schedule on hold but Hong says they will bring back live jazz entertainment in a couple months when they expand into a full-service Japanese-style restaurant.
