Meeting on parks to be held Feb. 23

The Department of Parks and Recreation will hold a public workshop at Nathan Hale High School on Tuesday, Feb. 23, from 7-9 p.m. in the school cafeteria.

The purpose of the meeting is to enlist help from the public in revising the department's policy and procedure for informing and involving citizens in prospective park projects, plans and events.

Parks Department spokesman, Paul Bergman, says that the current public involvement policy which was enacted in 1992 is too cumbersome. Bergman says that although the Parks Department has sent out bulk mailings of up to 3000, people don't react to Park announcements until they actually see construction activity. By that time, decisions have already been made.

Bergman lists the controversy over the Queen Anne Bowl where the sports field was upgraded without many of the immediate neighbors offering any input. Bergman says that once the project was underway, neighbors pointed out that the improvement would mean more traffic in their community.

Bergman hopes that the new process will reach a broader audience.

Nathan Hale is located at 10750 30th Ave. NE in the Meadowbrook neighborhood. For information, contact Dewey Potter at 684-7241.
