LETTER TO THE EDITOR:
Thank you for your article concerning Civic Light Opera (CLO) and its union "problem." The lighter touch which you used to discuss the situation is much appreciated.
Indeed, it was a bit of irony that "Rags" (Editor: a musical about the turn-of-century union movement in the garment industry) should be the production when some of the orchestra members should decide to break their contracts. Had we been more clairvoyant we would have known one year ago what was in the cards.
CLO firmly believes that they must remain true to its original mission and keep the door open to all talented people whether they be musicians, actors or production staff. All who love the theater are welcome.
It is rather strange that a small group of adults feel that they must have "someone taking care of us." On the other hand, they are "professional" and want to dictate terms. The union likes to brandish such issues as, unauthorized recordings and bookings (which we have never considered), hiring policies (they are offered a professional contract). If they like it, they sign it; if not, fine - it's their choice. Break times - they are regularly given. Safety in the (orchestra) pit - any situations in the pit have been addressed years ago. They wanted the stage cleaned without dust - so we mop it. Grievance procedure - tell the director it will be taken care of!
Let's be honest. They say respect. That's spelled Re$pect. They were paid an additional $um last year and are currently paid more than other members of the cast or production crew.
The union calls the board "untrustworthy." That is strange, we were not the ones who broke our contracts. We have never refused a proferred substitute when one of them found a "gig" that paid them more money.
If the union feels they are gaining friends with this action, I've got new for them. My mail is decidedly on the side of CLO: "Don't sign any contracts with the union."
Maybe the musicians should come in out of the rain, where they put themselves, make music and spend less time making loud and discordant noise.
Should you, the public, decide to support us, please do. "The Boy Friend" is in rehearsal, the cast is great, the music will let you leave the theater with a bounce in your step. We are here! With your support we intend to stay.
